NMJ642-O01- WEEK 4 ASSIGNMENT

Reflections on NMJ642-O 01:

Media Law & Ethics

This course has been one of the most impactful experiences in my Mastery journey so far.

The legal knowledge and ethical frameworks I acquired over the past month gave me a deeper understanding of the real-world challenges communication professionals face, and the tools to navigate them.

My Favorite Assignment

My favorite assignment was the Social Media Podcast we completed during Week Three.

This project pushed me to apply legal reasoning and ethical decision-making in a real-world scenario, crafting a podcast script and recording a message on responsible communication.

I loved how this assignment fused creativity and legal insight, giving me a platform to speak authentically about the implications of online speech while practicing storytelling and audio production techniques.

It also helped me develop my voice as an ethical communicator in a digital landscape dominated by misinformation and blurred lines.

Most Helpful Course Topics

The topic that stood out as most helpful was the Commercial Speech Doctrine and the Central Hudson Test. Learning how the First Amendment interacts with advertising law clarified the legal limits on what we can and cannot say as professionals, especially when profit is involved. In the age of influencers, AI-generated content, and viral marketing, understanding where free speech ends and commercial accountability begins is crucial. I now feel more confident reviewing content not just from a creative lens, but from a risk management and legal perspective.

How This Prepares Me Professionally

This course has prepared me to handle legal issues by giving me both a solid foundation in media law and a strong moral compass.

As someone building an investigative journalism platform and producing branded content under multiple public identities, I now understand how to protect myself and my audiences.

I am better equipped to identify red flags in communication, avoid deceptive practices, and ensure that my work complies with FTC standards, copyright law, and ethical best practices.

Above all, I feel empowered—not just to speak—but to speak with integrity.

That is the essence of leadership in media today.
